Research bridges the past, present, and future, enabling informed progress and unlocking our community's potential based on knowledge and shared heritage

Environmental Studies

The considerable extent of industrial growth in northeastern Alberta has had a profound effect on the Lakeland Métis community. Since 2011, the Lakeland Métis community has been actively engaged in a series of comprehensive Traditional Land Use studies to better understand the impact of this growth. These studies have been instrumental in providing valuable insights into how the community's traditional lands and resources have been affected by industrial activities.

As the Lakeland Métis community continues to grow and evolve, so does its capacity to conduct research and gather data. In addition to the Traditional Land Use studies, the community is now expanding its research to include a focus on socioeconomic impacts. This new area of research aims to assess the economic and social effects of industrial growth on the community as a whole.

Overall, the efforts of the Lakeland Métis community in conducting these studies demonstrate their commitment to understanding and addressing the impacts of industrial growth. By expanding their research to include socioeconomic impacts and establishing a baseline for community health studies, they are taking proactive steps to ensure the long-term sustainability and well-being of their community in the face of ongoing industrial development in northeastern Alberta.

Residential Schools

Lakeland Métis is deeply engaged in an extensive research project at the historically significant Lac La Biche Mission site, once a Residential School and Convent. Our initial findings shed light on the immense suffering endured by those who were forced to attend. Survivor stories have moved us profoundly.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the brave survivors who endured unimaginable pain. Your strength is inspiring. We stand in solidarity with you, recognizing the courage it takes to share your stories.

We also acknowledge the intergenerational trauma resulting from the abuse, affecting subsequent generations. To these generations, we offer our heartfelt compassion and support. Healing and reconciliation are our goals, working towards a future free from such atrocities.

Lakeland Métis is committed to uncovering the truth, honoring survivors' experiences, and advocating for justice. Together, we strive for a compassionate future, replacing the legacy of abuse with healing and understanding.

Elders

The Lakeland Métis Senior Program is diligently aligned with crucial national priorities to enhance the well-being of our elders. These priorities encompass supporting healthy aging, preventing senior abuse, celebrating diversity, fostering inclusivity, and enabling seniors to age gracefully at home, known as "aging in place."

Our program promotes healthy aging by offering initiatives, workshops, and educational sessions that address physical, mental, and emotional well-being, nurturing longevity and vitality.

Furthermore, we are deeply committed to providing comprehensive support to our esteemed elders, ensuring they can continue engaging in their cherished traditional activities. These activities play a vital role in not only preserving our cultural heritage but also in uplifting their spirits and fostering a sense of connection to their roots and community. By actively facilitating these traditional gatherings and endeavors, we aim to create meaningful opportunities for our elders to share their wisdom, pass down their traditions to younger generations, and enjoy a sense of belonging within the Lakeland Métis community.
